Colt Detective Special .38 SPL

Updated August 24, 2026

This Colt Detective Special double-action/single-action revolver is chambered in .38 Special and represents one of the most recognizable American concealed-carry revolvers of the 20th century. Serial number F24702, this example features an approximately 2.25" barrel with a shiny bore and remains in good overall condition. The revolver features a steel frame, exposed hammer, swing-out cylinder, and compact wood grips. Paint is present within portions of the grooves on the wood grips, giving this particular example a distinctive appearance. Introduced in the 1920s, the Detective Special became a favorite among plainclothes law enforcement officers, detectives, and civilians because it combined a compact barrel with Colt’s traditional revolver craftsmanship and a six-shot cylinder. Original Colt Detective Specials remain popular with collectors who appreciate classic American snub-nose revolvers. With its short barrel, wood grips, shiny bore, and iconic Colt name, this is a desirable example of an enduring defensive revolver design. Please see photos.
