Recoleccion - Andean Harvest Master Tablas de Sarhua Narrative Painting. This exceptional and completely original Tablas de Sarhua painting, titled Recoleccion - Andean Harvest, is a hand-painted narrative work by renowned Peruvian master artisan Julian Ramos Alfaro and Family. Created within the celebrated artistic tradition of Sarhua, Ayacucho, the elongated wooden panel presents a vivid sequence of scenes devoted to harvesting, agriculture, community labor, and the intimate relationship between Andean families and the land. Organized vertically like a painted visual chronicle, the composition unfolds through several distinct episodes. At the top, beneath the radiant figure of Inti, the Andean sun, men and women gather yellow fruits from trees against a mountainous landscape. Below, another scene depicts the harvesting and sorting of apples, with family members climbing trees, collecting produce, and arranging the harvest in baskets. The following register celebrates the gathering of flowers and plants. Women dressed in traditional Andean garments work collectively around abundant flowering bushes, carrying baskets and arranging freshly harvested plants. Decorative geometric and floral borders separate the individual episodes and give rhythm to the tall composition. The final section depicts the collection associated with cochinilla and prickly pear cactus, recognizable through the dense fields of green cactus pads and the figures working among them. Together, these successive scenes create a rich portrait of agricultural knowledge, seasonal work, family collaboration, and rural life in the Andean world. One of the defining qualities of the Tablas de Sarhua tradition is precisely this ability to transform everyday activities into visual memory. Farming, harvesting, family occupations, celebrations, and community customs are recorded through finely drawn figures, expressive gestures, traditional clothing, landscapes, plants, and explanatory inscriptions. Each tableau becomes both an artwork and a narrative document of cultural identity. The elongated format recalls the historic character of Sarhua painting, in which wooden boards served as carriers of family and community history. The traditional painting known as Tablas de Sarhua was officially declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation of Peru in 2018, recognizing its importance in safeguarding collective memory and the cultural identity of Sarhua. Works by the artist have previously been presented through auctions organized by the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI). ARTIST Julian Ramos Alfaro is one of the recognized contemporary masters of the Tablas de Sarhua tradition. Originally from Sarhua, Ayacucho, he began learning this art at approximately eleven years of age and has devoted decades to preserving, developing, and disseminating it together with his family. In recognition of his artistic trajectory and contribution
