The complete 4-volume Pulitzer Prize Edition. A Biography by noted American historian Douglas Southall Freeman. Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons of New York and identified on the title pages and bindings as the Pulitzer Prize Edition. Copyright dates shown are 1934 and 1936. Freeman’s extensively researched biography examines Robert E. Lee’s family life, military career, leadership, strategy, and postwar years. Originally envisioned as a single volume, the work expanded to four volumes following nearly two decades of research and consultation of previously underused documents, correspondence, military records, and family papers. The matching hardcover volumes feature textured gray bindings with red title panels, gilt lettering, decorative gilt bands, laurel motifs, and individually numbered spines. An attractive and substantial library set with strong visual appeal. Condition: Complete set of Volumes I–IV. Bindings remain attractive, with expected age-related wear, light rubbing, and some loss or fading to the gilt decoration, most noticeably along the upper spine of Volume IV. Page edges show toning and scattered discoloration consistent with age. Interior pages appear generally clean and readable, with some occasional spotting and foxing visible. No dust jackets present. Please review all photographs for the most accurate assessment of condition. An appealing set for collectors of American history, Civil War literature, military biography, or decorative vintage books.
