J.D. Costner (1895-1974) Harrisburg, AR | Flint, MI c.1940's 6.25" long Rare example for this maker with typical cross hatching at insert exhaust. Single reed call with excellent surface. It's believed Costner made his first call in the 1920's. He was a craftsman by nature and is only known to have made a small handful of duck calls, none of which were sold but given to friends and hunting partners. He is also said to have made baby rattles, baseball bats, and furniture as a hobby. To provide a better life he moved to Flint, Michigan in 1943 to work for General Motors where he made calls until an unfortunate car accident in 1953. Costner was the friend and hunting partner of John "Sandy" Morrow (1880-1957), another iconic call maker who resided in Flint. Condition: Very good and original with a couple tiny shallow dents on the barrel, small chip on shoulder and mouth piece. Tiny wood defect on insert.
