James Augustus "Catfish" Hunter was a legendary Hall of Fame right-handed pitcher who anchored two major baseball dynasties in the 1970s and revolutionized the economics of Major League Baseball as its first modern free agent. Renowned for his surgical precision and ice-cold composure under pressure, Hunter captured five World Series rings, won the 1974 American League Cy Young Award, and threw the AL's first regular-season perfect game in 46 years. Over a dominant 15-year career spanning from 1965 to 1979, he compiled 224 wins, making him one of only three modern pitchers to reach the 200-win milestone before turning 31 years old.Tragically, Hunter was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease) in 1998 and passed away a year later at the age of 53.
