The 1900 Lafayette Dollar and the 1893 Isabella Quarter are two of the most historic and highly coveted issues from the "classic era" of United States commemorative coinage (1892–1954). They hold distinct titles in numismatic history: the Lafayette Dollar is the only silver dollar commemorative of the classic era, while the Isabella Quarter is the only commemorative quarter ever issued during that period. Because they are often paired together by collectors as a custom "historical set," they frequently appear together at major auctions. 1900 Lafayette Dollar Historical Significance: Minted to raise funds for a statue of General Lafayette in Paris, this coin features a dual portrait of George Washington and Lafayette. It represents the first time a U.S. President was depicted on a U.S. coin. It remains the only classic U.S. coin to feature a foreign monarch. Mintage & Availability: It has a remarkably low net mintage of 24,214 coins. A tiny fraction of these (roughly 103) were struck as incredibly rare Proofs. Condition & Value: Unlike the Lafayette Dollar, a higher proportion of Isabella Quarters were kept as uncirculated souvenirs, making Mint State grades a bit easier to find.
