Edward S. Curtis – “A Feast Day at Acoma,” 1904Portfolio from The North American IndianPhotogravure, image size approximately 11¼ × 15¼ inches (standard large folio plate size). A lively, wide view of Acoma Pueblo (Sky City) during a feast day or communal gathering. Multi-level adobe dwellings rise around the plaza; crowds of people occupy the rooftops and move through the open space below. Horses stand or walk in the foreground, ladders lean against walls, and piles of goods (possibly wood or provisions) are visible. Distant hills form the backdrop under a soft sky. Curtis photographed this scene in 1904, capturing both the architecture of the ancient mesa-top village and the social activity of a feast day.
