1943-P Jefferson “War Nickel” (silver wartime alloy).IdentificationDate & mint: 1943 Philadelphia (large “P” mint mark above Monticello on the reverse). This was the first time the Philadelphia Mint used a “P” mint mark on a circulating U.S. coin.Type: Jefferson nickel, wartime silver composition (1942–1945). These are commonly called “war nickels.”Composition: 35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese (to conserve nickel metal for the war effort). Actual silver weight is approximately 0.0563 troy ounces.Design: Obverse — Thomas Jefferson facing left. Reverse — Monticello with the large wartime mint mark above the dome.The date and large “P” are clear. No overdate (such as the scarcer 1943/2-P) or major doubled-die features are visible in the photos.ConditionCirculated with moderate wear. Jefferson’s hair and cheek show flattening; Monticello details (including the steps) are softened and not fully sharp. Dark toning/patina is present, which is common on these silver-alloy coins. Overall grade estimate is roughly Fine to Very Fine (F–VF). Not Full Steps and not Mint State.
