High Grade Pre-Civil War Knight's Head Militia Officer's Sword. Highly engraved, fancy U.S militia officer's sword from the period immediately pre-dating the American Civil War. The sword measures nearly 38" overall with a 31" double edged and etched blade. NO discernable makers mark but the blade (likely of European origin) is etched with fancy floral patterns. The hilt is of highly decorated cast brass with a fancy cross guard having a spread winged American eagle in the center. The grip is of highly carved bone surmounted by a wonderful, plumed knight's head pommel. The guard is a simple chain emanating from the helmet to the cross guard. The scabbard is of brass with three carrying rings and a stud for a belt frog. There is fancy floral engraving at the top and middle mounts as well as above the drag. Between the top and middle mount is a beautifully engraved American eagle and shield. There are a few minor dents and dings in the scabbard, the blade has a gray patina and the grip and hilt are very fine. A very attractive high grade militia officer's sword.
