Original WWI German M1917 gas mask complete with its cylindrical steel carrying canister, retaining the original hinged lid, web carrying strap, and field-applied finish. The canister houses the original rubberized fabric gas mask with integral glass eyepieces, metal filter assembly, and adjustable head harness. Also included is the original German-language instruction disc titled "Gebrauchsanweisung" (Instructions for Use), a desirable surviving accessory seldom found with these sets. The canister exhibits expected field wear, including surface oxidation, paint loss, scratches, and handling marks consistent with wartime service. The gas mask retains its original components and displays age-related wear and patina appropriate for its period. Canister measures approximately 8.25 inches high x 4.75 inches in diameter (21 cm x 12 cm). Introduced in 1917 in response to the increasing use of chemical warfare on the Western Front, the M1917 gas mask became standard protective equipment for German soldiers during the latter years of World War I. A complete and historically significant example of early military protective equipment with exceptional display and collector appeal. SC
