Watercolor on paper, framed. Attributed to Qi Baishi (1864–1957). Depicting chrysanthemums rendered in expressive red and black brushstrokes with accompanying signature, calligraphy above and two red seals, the work reflects Qi Baishi’s characteristic style, defined by spontaneous ink handling, simplified natural forms, and the integration of painting and inscription as a unified composition. 31.5 cm x 52 cm. The floral subject, freehand technique, and balanced placement of seals align with themes central to Qi’s mature period, during which he focused on plants, insects, and everyday motifs executed with direct, economical brushwork. Comparable works featuring chrysanthemum studies, calligraphic inscriptions, and seal impressions appear in major institutional collections, including the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, the Hunan Provincial Museum, the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institution, all of which hold examples demonstrating similar brush technique, subject matter, and compositional structure.
