Oil on canvas, framed. Attributed to Birger Sandzén (1871–1954). Depicting a monumental yellow rock formation reflected in a still body of water and surrounded by vividly colored trees in orange, red, green, and yellow, the composition exemplifies Sandzén’s mature landscape vocabulary, defined by heavy impasto, prismatic color, and sculptural, block-like brushwork. The distant hills rendered in purples and blues beneath a pink-blue sky with a luminous celestial disc reinforce his characteristic interplay of atmospheric light and expressive chromatic structure. Signed Birger Sandzén at the lower right. Stamps on verso of Gramercy Galleries. 80 x 52 cm (31.5" x 20.5"), framed: 101.6 x 71 cm (40" x 28"). Works featuring similarly bold geological masses, saturated palettes, and textured surfaces appear in the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, all holding paintings that share comparable chromatic intensity and structural dynamism.
