Artist Biography: Erasto Cortés Juárez (1900–1972) was one of Mexico's foremost twentieth-century printmakers, engravers, and educators. Born in Tepeaca, Puebla, he studied at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City and became renowned for his mastery of wood engraving, linocut, and relief printmaking. Throughout his career, Cortés Juárez documented the architecture, landscapes, and daily life of Mexico through highly accomplished black-and-white prints distinguished by strong composition and meticulous craftsmanship. He taught for many years at La Esmeralda (Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado) and influenced generations of Mexican printmakers. His work is represented in major public collections, including the Museo Nacional de la Estampa (MUNAE), the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBAL), and numerous museum and university collections throughout Mexico and internationally. Today, Erasto Cortés Juárez is regarded as one of the leading figures of modern Mexican printmaking, with his original wood engravings and relief prints continuing to be sought after by collectors of Latin American art and twentieth-century graphic works.
