Artist: Herbert Raine, RCA (1875–1951) Title: Untitled (Horse Cart in Village Street) Medium: Original Etching on Paper Signature: Initialled in the plate lower right: H.R. Sight Size: Approximately 5.5 × 7.5 in. (visible plate) Frame Size: Approximately 13 × 13 in. A finely executed original etching by Canadian printmaker Herbert Raine depicting a quiet European village street with a horse-drawn cart travelling between traditional cottages beneath mature trees. Delicate etched lines and subtle drypoint-like textures create an atmospheric composition that demonstrates Raine's exceptional command of architectural perspective and rural landscape. Although best known for his Montreal and Quebec subjects, Raine also produced numerous etchings inspired by travels throughout England and continental Europe. The present work exemplifies his sensitive handling of light, texture, and everyday rural life, making it an appealing example of early twentieth-century Canadian printmaking. Artist Biography: Herbert Raine, RCA (1875–1951) was a British-born Canadian architect, painter, draftsman, and one of Canada's foremost early twentieth-century etchers. Born in Sunderland, England, he studied at the Sunderland School of Art and later worked as an architect before immigrating to Montreal in 1907. Raine became widely recognized for his finely detailed etchings depicting the architecture, streets, and historic landmarks of Quebec, Montreal, England, France, and Italy.A regular exhibitor with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) and the Art Association of Montreal, Raine played an important role in the revival of original printmaking in Canada during the early twentieth century. His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and numerous public and private collections. His original etchings continue to be sought after for their technical refinement, historical significance, and enduring appeal to collectors of Canadian prints.
