Artist Biography: Louis Muhlstock, RCA (1904–2001) was one of Canada's most respected twentieth-century painters, draftsmen, and printmakers. Born in Narajów, Galicia (now Ukraine), he immigrated to Montreal as a child and studied at the Monument-National under Edmond Dyonnet before establishing a distinguished career as both an artist and educator. Muhlstock became widely recognized during the 1930s for his poignant depictions of working-class Montreal during the Depression. Throughout his long career he remained committed to direct observation, producing outstanding portraits, figure studies, landscapes, and urban scenes distinguished by exceptional draftsmanship and psychological insight. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) and exhibited extensively with the Art Association of Montreal, the Canadian Group of Painters, and the Royal Canadian Academy. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, and numerous other public institutions across Canada. Today, Louis Muhlstock is regarded as one of Canada's foremost figurative artists. Original drawings and portrait studies are especially prized for their technical brilliance, expressive sensitivity, and connection to one of Canada's most accomplished draftsmen.
