Estimate: 1 / 1000 Hugo, Herman; Otto van Veen; Jan Suderman. DE GODLIEVENDE ZIEL VERTOONT IN ZINNEBEELDEN... MET DICHTKUNSTIGE VERKLARINGEN VAN JAN SUDERMAN. Amsterdam: By Henrik Wetstein; sold by Marten Schagen, 1724. 12mo. Replete with finely engraved plates. Bound in attractive period vellum over boards, Very Good. A handsome Dutch edition of Herman Hugo's celebrated emblem book, Pia Desideria ("The God-Loving Soul"), here adapted into Dutch with explanatory verse by Jan Suderman and incorporating the celebrated emblematic engravings designed by Otto van Veen (Vaenius), Rubens's renowned teacher. This edition is loaded with finely engraved emblematic plates, each pairing an allegorical image with devotional text and verse to illustrate the soul's spiritual journey toward God, making it one of the classic illustrated works of Christian emblem literature. The present copy bears the attractive engraved bookplate of William Whittingham to the front pastedown. Condition: For lots in this online-only auction, condition is stated in general terms only, ranging from Poor to Fine, with Good being average (i.e. an exhaustive list of individual flaws is not included, but only our opinion of the overall cumulative grade is provided.) Most books in this sale have been given a brief inspection only and have not been fully collated (unless the collation is shown.) However, if loss or absence of text is observed during our inspection, then this will always be noted in the description. All lots are sold as-is and not subject to return for any reason.
