Estimate: 1 / 1000 Speech of the Hon. Mr. Leigh, of Virginia, on the Expunging Resolution, Delivered in the Senate of the United States, on Monday, Arpil 4, 1836. Washington, 1836. 8vo, disbound. Fair only. This pamphlet prints the Virginia Senator Benjamin Watkins Leigh's speech opposing Andrew Jackson's famous "Expunging Resolution," which sought to erase from the Senate Journal the 1834 censure that had condemned Jackson for removing federal deposits from the Second Bank of the United States without congressional approval. Leigh argues that expunging the censure would violate the integrity of the historical record and further enlarge executive power, making the speech an important contemporary defense of constitutional limits on presidential authority during the Bank War. Condition: For lots in this online-only auction, condition is stated in general terms only, ranging from Poor to Fine, with Good being average (i.e. an exhaustive list of individual flaws is not included, but only our opinion of the overall cumulative grade is provided.)
