Henry Wirz (1823–1865), the commandant of the Confederate prison at Andersonville, was tried by a U.S. military commission after the Civil War on charges of conspiracy and murder arising from the appalling conditions that led to the deaths of nearly 13,000 Union prisoners. Convicted in 1865, he was executed by hanging, becoming one of the few Confederate officers executed for war crimes, though historians continue to debate the fairness of his trial and the extent of his personal responsibility.
