Title: Stacked Color Fields in Red, Blue, Black, and Orange on Ochre Technique: Gouache on paper Measures: 16 x 13 inches (40.6 x 33.0 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with rich, saturated coloration and softly brushed, slightly translucent color fields showing visible brush marks and scumbled edges. No significant tears, losses, or creases are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a brushed pewter-toned metal frame with a wide, angled profile, showing minor surface wear. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Private Collection Visual Description: A quiet, meditative abstraction in vertical format, composed of four horizontal rectangles of color stacked one above another against a warm ochre and tan ground that shows through as narrow borders and gaps between them. At the top, a large field of vermilion and scarlet red glows with subtle variations in density, its edges soft and feathered. Below it, a narrower band of bright cerulean and cobalt blue provides a cool contrast, its lower edge breaking into small irregular flickers. The largest form occupies the lower middle of the sheet, a deep, smoky rectangle of charcoal and blue-black, enlivened by faint passages of brown and violet that seem to shift beneath the surface. At the bottom, a slim band of bright tangerine orange echoes the warmth of the red above. The rectangles do not touch the edges of the sheet, and their blurred, brushy contours make them appear to float and hover over the ground. The interplay of warm and cool tones, the contrast of light and dark masses, and the contemplative stillness of the arrangement reflect the visual language of Color Field painting and Abstract Expressionism. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
