Hand-Colored Theater Etching. An original mid-nineteenth-century hand-colored theatrical etching depicting McKean Buchanan as Macbeth in Macbeth. These portrayals illustrate the elaborate dress and historical interpretation favored by nineteenth-century Shakespearean productions. Regal standing figure wears crown, burgundy robe, wide gold belt, and richly patterned tunic inside a palace. The composition is presented on a cream paper sheet measuring 10 x 12 inches overall; image dimensions have not been provided. Reverse label identifies McKean Buchanan as Macbeth. Visible condition: Mild mount toning; faint spotting and wear to label on reverse. Review all supplied photographs for paper margins, lettering and details. This is a period printed etching with hand-applied color rather than a one-of-a-kind painted portrait; individual impressions can vary in coloring.
