Title: Abstract Composition in Mauve, Green, and Burgundy Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 20 x 16 inches Year: 1956 (inscribed on the reverse) Condition: Appears in good overall condition, with muted coloration, softly blended color fields, and visible variations in the painted surface. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. The composition displays subtle variations in pigment density and texture, particularly along the transitions between the horizontal color bands. Presented in a warm brown wooden frame with minor signs of surface wear. The reverse displays an aged canvas support with scattered discoloration, staining, and handling marks. A hanging wire is attached to the wooden support. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: The piece was acquired in 2014 from a gallery by a private collector in the Middle East. It was offered at auction in 2021 and purchased by a European private collection, where it remains. Visual Description: An abstract composition presents a sequence of broad horizontal color fields arranged within a luminous mauve and magenta background. The upper portion features a softly defined rectangular passage of pale ivory and warm cream, transitioning into an expansive field of muted gray, taupe, and subtle lavender tones. Across the central section, a narrow horizontal band of deep forest green establishes a strong visual division between the lighter upper area and the darker lower composition. Beneath this band, a substantial rectangular field of burgundy, plum, and muted reddish-brown occupies the lower portion of the canvas, its edges softly dissolving into the surrounding violet ground. The transitions between the color fields are irregular and atmospheric, with feathered boundaries, subtle variations in opacity, and visible painterly textures that create a sense of depth and luminosity. The composition relies on the interaction of contrasting warm and cool tones, allowing the broad rectangular forms to appear suspended within the surrounding color. The restrained geometry, softened contours, and layered chromatic relationships evoke the contemplative qualities of Color Field painting and Abstract Expressionism. The reverse bears a handwritten inscription reading “1956.” This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
