This figural lidded jar, likely used as a tobacco humidor, is crafted from terracotta and finished with cold painting. The piece depicts a bust of a Black man emerging from a textured, dark green gourd or melon. The figure wears a white pith helmet, a black jacket, and a yellow waistcoat with a red cravat. The interior shows the natural reddish-orange color of the earthenware body. The underside of the base is impressed with the mark Czechoslovakia, the model number 3417, and the initials J M B. A handwritten 17 in gold-toned paint is also visible on the base. Height: approx. 8.5 inches (measured against a ruler). Condition: The item shows significant signs of wear and age, including extensive flaking and loss of the cold-painted surface on the face, helmet, and jacket. Small chips and abrasions are located along the interior mating rims of the lid and the base.
