Title: Seated Woman in a Straw Hat with Cat Technique: Gouache on paper Measures: 13 x 9 inches (approximately 33.0 x 22.9 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in good overall condition. The work displays vivid colors, bold black contours, and visible brushwork throughout. Minor surface wear, small scattered losses near the upper right, and age-related imperfections may be present, with toning and staining on the reverse. Presented unframed. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Private collection, Nashville, Tennessee; reportedly purchased privately in the 1970s. Previous ownership information was conveyed verbally. Visual Description: A vibrant Cubist-inspired portrait of a woman seated in a dark wooden chair, her face combining profile and frontal views beneath a wide golden-yellow straw hat. Her face is divided into planes of white and yellow-green, with two blue eyes, a pale blue patch on one cheek, and dark hair falling in looping bands outlined in light blue. She wears a deep blue dress with a white collar and curving light blue ornament. A stylized black cat with light blue markings sits on her lap, its round face and whiskers turned toward the viewer, while her pale yellow arms rest along the sides of the chair. The background is laid in with loose strokes of green and turquoise. Rendered in the Cubist style of Pablo Picasso, the work emphasizes simultaneous viewpoints, bold contour, and expressive color, recalling the artist’s celebrated seated portraits of women from the late 1930s and 1940s. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
