Alvin Elif Constant, (d 2006) known as Wandering Spirit and nicknamed “Angel.” Title Faith & Purpose Date: 2000 Medium: Mixed media / hand-coloured work on paper Dimensions: Approx. 22 × 28 in. (sheet) Framing: Unframed A striking and highly graphic Indigenous Canadian work depicting two stylized loons facing one another beneath a turquoise celestial disc. Their elongated black bodies form a nearly symmetrical composition, while turquoise, black, white and reddish details animate the birds' heads. Pale grey linear forms, suggestive of birds, reeds or spiritual movement, cross behind the central figures. Artist Biography Alvin Elif Constant, also known as Wandering Spirit and “Angel,” was a Canadian Indigenous artist whose distinctive work incorporated Indigenous imagery, spirituality and personal symbolism. Constant developed an immediately recognizable graphic vocabulary characterized by animals and birds, flowing contours, strong areas of colour and spiritually suggestive imagery. Constant's life and artistic career were unconventional. He travelled extensively and produced works that circulated through private collections, with his art often becoming closely intertwined with the people and communities he encountered. He was known by the nickname “Angel,” reportedly reflecting his generosity toward others. Constant died during the winter of 2006, reportedly after freezing to death while living on the streets of Calgary. His unusual life story, the dispersed nature of his work and his highly individual visual language have contributed to renewed interest in documenting his artistic legacy.
