Title: Coastal Landscape Beneath a Swirling Sky Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 10 x 14 inches Year: Undated Condition: Good overall condition. The painted surface presents pronounced textural relief with densely layered applications of pigment and strongly articulated directional brushwork throughout. The coloration remains well preserved, with passages of blue, green, ochre, yellow, orange, and violet maintaining strong visual contrast. Minor surface wear and handling marks consistent with age and display may be present. The canvas appears stable and display-ready, retaining its heavily worked surface and overall visual impact. Presented in a broad gold-tone frame showing light age-related wear. Provenance: Private collection, Zurich, Switzerland; reportedly acquired through a private transaction in the 1970s from a collector of Post-Impressionist and Expressionist art. Previous ownership details were conveyed verbally by the consignor. Visual Description: This horizontally oriented coastal landscape depicts a sweeping shoreline curving around a broad expanse of water beneath an animated sky. A steep rocky formation rises along the upper-left portion of the composition, its rugged contours articulated through dense passages of dark blue, gray-green, ochre, yellow, and muted orange. Above the cliffs, compact masses of green vegetation are constructed from curling, rhythmic strokes, while the coastline gradually recedes toward a distant horizon at center-right. The foreground is dominated by a dramatically undulating shore rendered through elongated ribbons of ochre, golden yellow, orange, rust, violet, green, and blue. These directional strokes curve and converge toward the water, creating a pronounced sensation of movement across the terrain. The sea is organized through repeated horizontal bands of blue, turquoise, green, cream, and yellow, establishing a calmer counter-rhythm to the restless shoreline. In the upper-right register, curling cloud formations and sweeping blue-green strokes animate the sky, echoing the rhythmic movement found throughout the land and water. The substantial application of pigment gives the composition an almost sculptural surface, while emphatic contours and heightened, non-naturalistic color transform the observed landscape into an expressive interpretation of nature. The energetic brushwork, pronounced impasto, rhythmic linear structure, intensified color relationships, and emotional treatment of the natural environment evoke the visual vocabulary of late 19th-century Post-Impressionism. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
