In good condition for age, with minor imperfections. 40.5" tall x 20" deep x 42.25" wide. One small middle drawer, 2 smaller drawers to the right and left of center and three large drawers. This furniture piece is an authentic American Empire period chest of drawers dating from roughly 1820 to 1840. Because furniture from this era was constructed by local cabinetmakers and independent woodworking shops before the rise of mass-production factories, there is usually no specific corporate brand name associated with it. Instead, it is classified by its regional stylistic period. The piece is built in the classic American Empire style, which was modeled heavily after French Napoleonic furniture to emphasize heavy, monumental proportions. Its drawer fronts showcase beautiful crotch walnut or crotch mahogany book-matched veneers, which early woodworkers created by cutting wood where a branch met the main trunk to produce that distinctive, fiery V-shaped grain pattern. The vertical corners feature tight, hand-carved reeding along the stiles, reflecting the architectural and classical Greek Revival influences popularized by legendary New York craftsmen like Duncan Phyfe. It also utilizes large, turned wooden knob pulls typical of the early-to-mid 19th century alongside inset brass skeleton key holes. See photos for details.
