Hand-carved and polychrome-painted Hopi Buffalo Kachina (Katsina) by noted First Mesa artist Alexander R. Youvella Sr. The figure features an elaborate buffalo-form headdress with carved horns, ears and projecting snout, detailed traditional clothing, moccasins, and carved implements held in each hand. Mounted on a natural-form carved wooden base. The underside is extensively hand-inscribed “Alexander R. Youvella Sr. / Murcia’s Taka / Buffalo Kachina / (2nd Mesa Version)”, along with Hopi/Tewa, 1st Mesa, Polacca, AZ, and pictographic artist/clan markings. Youvella is a recognized Hopi carver from First Mesa and a member of a prominent family of katsina carvers. Measures approximately 10” tall overall; base measures approximately 4.5” wide x 3” deep.
