Vicki MacLean, numbered etching, “Pre Millennium”, 10" x 25", numbered lower centre 12/60, signed lower right, framed. Vicki MacLean is an established Nova Scotian artist whose work is deeply rooted in the rural landscape and natural environment of the province. She is particularly recognized for her paintings in oil and watercolour, as well as her finely executed intaglio prints and copper-plate etchings. Her work captures the changing light, colour and seasonal character of the Nova Scotian landscape with a precise yet expressive approach. MacLean graduated with an Honours BA in Art from Connecticut College for Women in 1960 and subsequently studied figure drawing, lithography and woodcut at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After moving to Canada, she lived in Cape Breton before establishing her studio in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She also taught art at St. Francis Xavier University and served as director of the university's art gallery. MacLean's work has been exhibited extensively in Atlantic Canada and is held in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Art Bank of Nova Scotia and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Her etchings are notable for their rich colour and variation, with MacLean employing the à la poupée intaglio technique to create distinctive colour effects within her editions.
