The phrase "ALL COLORED CAST" directly references racial stereotypes of people of colour in Hollywood cinema, while "IMPERIAL-" alludes to the oppression of colonialism and power structures. More than an expression of Basquiat's personal identity, the piece delivers a profound critique of race, history and cultural hegemony.
