Fake Chinese Sounds Identity Graphic Novel

Updated September 22, 2026

This middle-grade graphic novel follows the journey of Mei Ying, a Taiwanese American girl who grapples with her identity while facing the challenges of bullying and self-acceptance. As summer unfolds, Mei Ying finds herself caught betweenthe pressures of homework, studying, and attending Chinese school, leaving little room for excitement. Her solace comes from her time with her soccer team, the Divas, and the cherished visits from her Nai Nai, who comes from Taiwan. Despitethe language barrier—Mei Ying's Mandarin struggles and Nai Nai's limited English—they forge a special connection that deepens their bond. However, the arrival of new kid Sid complicates matters as he targets Mei Ying with racist jokes, leaving her feeling isolated. While her best friend advises her to ignore Sid, Mei Ying begins to question the silence around her. As her sense of invisibility grows, she faces the challenge of reclaiming her voice and identity. This poignantstory captures the complexities of growing up, cultural heritage, and the importance of standing up against bullying.
