Art Chinese Ancestor Portrait

This piece of artwork is a large Chinese ancestor portrait from the Qing Dynasty era depicting an elderly woman, high ranking matriarch seated in a frontal, symmetrical pose. The woman is wearing an elaborate blue and gold headdress adorned with strings of hanging pearls. In Chinese culture, the phoenix represents the empress, and these crowns were reserved for imperial women, royalty, and high-ranking noble matriarchs. The painting is executed with traditional materials, likely mineral pigments and ink on silk or paper and is presented in an ornate, gilded wooden frame. The back of the artwork contains a sticker that reads “JJ Gillespie Company Fine Art Galleries” also known as America’s oldest fine arts gallery. Frame measures 56.75” tall x 35.25” wide.
