Great selection of a Chinese 6-layer green jade stone mystery puzzle ball, perfect for any collector. Meticulously sculpted from a single solid block of natural green serpentine jade, this masterwork features six entirely concentric, nested spheres. Due to the absolute precision of the artisan involved, each layer is detached for the next and freely rotates completely independent of the outer shell. The exterior of the sphere shows great design, sharing elements of dragon scale and floral elements that pair well to display properties of delicate balance. Dating back to the Sung and Ming Dynasties, these balls are often referred to historically as “devil’s work” due to carving technique so complex that they seemed to defy human capability. Originally crafted for the imperial court, these spheres serve as a profonde cosmic metaphor. The outermost layer represents the physical, chaotic world , while the progressively deeper, hidden layers symbolize the unseen mysteries of the universe. Because they are carved from a single piece of stone, they are traditionally gifted as “generation balls”. The direct piece is in great shape with no chips, cracks, or damage based upon general overview. Spherical in shape, the item roughly measures 4.5” in all directions.
