oil painting captures a dramatic historical or nationalist scene, centering on a military commander leading his troops into battle. 13 1/2" by 9 3/4" .Good condition. A bearded, authoritative military commander or nobleman dominates the foreground, depicted from the upper thigh up in a powerful three-quarter stance. His left arm is raised high, pointing directly upward to rally or direct his troops. In his right hand, he firmly grips the hilt of a drawn curved saber or cavalry sword. He wears a distinct, high-crowned traditional kalpak or fur-trimmed hat, embellished with ornate gold embroidery or filigree along the front flap. His dark tunic is styled with decorative horizontal red-and-gold braided frog closures (brandebourgs) down the chest. Draped over his shoulders is a heavy, dark winter cloak trimmed with a thick fur collar. Behind the commander, rows of soldiers wearing dark caps or shakos stand in close formation. Their upright spears, bayonets, and pikes fill the mid-ground.
