Ronald William "Ron" Bolt RCA (Canadian, b. 1938), Atlantic Lace, 1991. An exceptionally evocative large-format colour serigraph on paper, pencil titled "Atlantic Lace" at lower left, numbered 124/175 at lower centre, and signed "Ron Bolt" and dated '91 in pencil at lower right. Sheet measures 29 1/2 x 32 1/4 inches; the substantial image occupies nearly the full width of the sheet.

Atlantic Lace is a quintessential expression of the coastal imagery for which Ron Bolt became particularly recognized, transforming the relentless motion of the Atlantic surf into an intricate and almost abstract field of light, pattern and movement. From an elevated viewpoint, successive bands of deep blue-green water advance toward shore before breaking into an extraordinary network of white foam. The retreating water spreads across the foreground in delicate filaments, pools and branching rivulets - literally suggesting the "lace" invoked by Bolt's title. At once highly observational and strongly compositional, the image moves between photorealism and abstraction, allowing the viewer first to recognize the sea and then to become absorbed by the remarkable surface geometry created by moving water.

Bolt occupies a distinguished position within postwar Canadian landscape art. Born in Toronto in 1938 and raised near the shores of Lake Ontario, he developed a career extending across painting, printmaking and public commissions, with water, coastlines, rivers and wilderness becoming persistent themes. His work has been exhibited extensively in Canada and internationally and is held in numerous public, museum, corporate and private collections. Bolt was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and subsequently served as its 27th President from 2000 to 2002, an important distinction within Canadian visual culture. His mature work is particularly associated with the dramatic meeting of water, light and landscape, subjects through which he combined close observation of nature with the formal lessons of abstraction.

The present 1991 serigraph belongs to a particularly compelling period in Bolt's printmaking. Other documented works from the period likewise explore surf and shoreline imagery in substantial limited editions, and auction records specifically confirm Atlantic Lace as a 1991 serigraph from an edition of 175. The subject was evidently of lasting importance to Bolt: decades later he returned to the title Atlantic Lace for a large oil-on-canvas treatment of the sea, underscoring the enduring place of this imagery within his artistic vocabulary.

The visual success of Atlantic Lace lies in Bolt's ability to monumentalize an instant that would otherwise disappear within seconds. The crashing breaker carries the force of a traditional maritime painting, yet the web-like foam spreading across the foreground possesses the intricacy of an abstract composition. Its substantial scale, strong horizontal sweep, cool maritime palette and extraordi
