Paavo (Paul) Hyttinen (Finnish-born Canadian, 20th century), Untitled (Autumn River Landscape), an original signed acrylic on board capturing the quiet grandeur of the Canadian wilderness in autumn. Signed “P. Hyttinen” at the lower right. Measuring 18 x 24 inches, the painting presents a broad, tranquil waterway receding through an atmospheric woodland of slender white-barked birches, dark conifers and richly colored deciduous trees, their russet, crimson, ochre and burgundy foliage framing the cool blue-green river beyond. Hyttinen employs vigorous, highly visible brushwork and passages of substantial impasto throughout the shoreline, rocks, foliage and foreground, imparting a tactile physicality to the painted surface while preserving the stillness and expansive depth of the landscape.
