This work is titled Hunter and was carved in 1999 by celebrated Inuk artist Alex Alikashuak of Whale Cove, Nunavut, in dark green serpentine stone with a finely hand made mixed-media spear of wood and metal. The dynamic openwork form and uninterrupted contours on all sides showing Alikashuak’s signature use of negative space as the figure rises in a fluid S-curve, knees bent and torso twisting as the hunter sights along the spear. A carefully carved mouth and inset light-toned eyes that animate the profile. The underside, where the official circular Igloo tag sticker is intact and legible, is accompanied by the registration number 99196419 that matches the separate certification card. The serpentine presents a rich, mottled charcoal-to-olive surface with natural mineral inclusions and a soft hand-rubbed sheen that highlights the planes of the carving, while the spear threads cleanly through the pierced head and shoulder apertures, accentuating the composition’s tension and forward drive. All elements are original and complete.
Dimensions: 5 inches wide x 1-2 inch deep x 12 1-2 inches tall for the stone figure only - spear not included in height.
This museum-quality example offers exceptional Inuit art presence for the advanced collector and a rare opportunity to acquire a definitive late 20th-century Whale Cove sculpture by Alex Alikashuak with perfect paperwork and matching numbers, ideal for high end display and investment grade Canadian Indigenous art acquisition.
Condition is excellent, with only the slightest shelf wear to the base and expected natural inclusions inherent to serpentine - no cracks, losses, or repairs - spear straight and secure - certification tag included.
AA37
