Thomas Kinkade (American, 1958-2012)
San Francisco, Lombard Street 2001
International Proof 533/690 I/P

A commanding large-format example of Thomas Kinkade's "San Francisco, Lombard Street," presented as a limited-edition giclée in color with acrylic embellishments on canvas, numbered 533/690 I/P from the International Proof edition and accompanied by its Park West Gallery Certificate of Authenticity, 2022 Park West appraisal, and related gallery correspondence.

Among Kinkade's most immediately recognizable urban compositions, San Francisco, Lombard Street transforms one of California's most celebrated city views into an expansive twilight panorama of illuminated architecture, descending streets, flowering gardens, automobiles, pedestrians, American flags, San Francisco Bay, distant hills, and the unmistakable silhouette of Coit Tower. The composition combines the artist's characteristic fascination with light, atmosphere, architectural intimacy, and romanticized place, extending those themes from his cottage and landscape subjects into the dramatic topography of San Francisco.

Viewed from the elevated curves of Lombard Street, the city unfolds in successive layers toward the waterfront. Warmly illuminated windows punctuate the cool blue, lavender, and rose tones of the evening sky, while hundreds of distant lights shimmer across the urban landscape. Reflections on the darkened roadway create a particularly effective foreground passage, leading the eye through vintage automobiles and a motorcycle before descending into the luminous city beyond. Abundant bougainvillea and other flowering plantings frame the scene in saturated reds, pinks, blues, and greens, intensifying the contrast between the intimate residential foreground and the vast metropolitan panorama.

Kinkade's enduring appeal rests in large part on this manipulation of illumination, and the present image exemplifies that quality particularly well. Interior lights, street lamps, distant buildings, reflections, and the fading natural light of dusk are orchestrated throughout the composition to create a layered sense of warmth and depth. The acrylic embellishments further heighten selected passages of the printed surface and contribute to the dimensional, painterly presentation associated with deluxe canvas editions of Kinkade imagery.

The work is numbered 533/690 I/P, identifying it as one of 690 Arabic-numbered International Proofs documented for this edition. The lower image area additionally bears the artist's authorized signature applied through the Thomas Kinkade estate using Autopen technology, exactly as described in the accompanying Park West Gallery documentation. This distinction is important: the signature is an estate-authorized applied signature rather than a personally hand-written signature by Kinkade.

The accompanying Park West Gallery Certificate of Authenticity, Registration No. 855551.0533, identifies the work as:

T
