A powerful and beautifully balanced narwhal by noted Inuk artist Johnny Kataluk of Coral Harbour, titled Norwhal and dated 2002. The sleek body is hand carved in a dark blue grey serpentine stone - the dense, fine grained stone widely and accurately referred to as soapstone in Inuit carving - with subtle natural veining that reads wonderfully under light. The sculptural form is elevated on a matching custom carved stone plinth with a contrasting light cylindrical riser, setting the animal in a lively, upward glide. The long spiral tusk projects confidently from the notched muzzle, giving the work its unmistakable silhouette and a dynamic sense of forward motion. Close views confirm crisp carving to the pectoral fins and tail, a gently rounded dorsal line, and a carefully finished surface with a soft matte sheen. The underside of the base bears the Canadian Igloo tag sticker and hand inscribed details, and the lot includes the original Government of Canada certified authenticity card completed in the artist’s hand documenting Johnny Kataluk, Coral Harbour, 2002 and the title Norwhal. Dimensions 15 1/2 in length x 5 1/2 in depth x 8 in tall for the sculpture on stand - tusk length not included. Condition presents as excellent with only the faintest surface rubs and natural stone inclusions expected of serpentine, the tusk straight and the mount secure. For collectors of museum quality Canadian Indigenous and Inuit art, this is an elegant, display ready example with impeccable documentation, strong Coral Harbour provenance, and the timeless subject of the Arctic unicorn rendered in resonant dark stone that will anchor any serious collection or design setting. Included - original certification tag.<br>B10 <br> <br>
