Original signed F.F. Field painting depicting Deer Isle, Maine, a historic island community whose working harbors, lobster fisheries and weathered coastal architecture have long formed an important part of the visual identity of New England. Executed on canvas and signed "FIELD" at lower right, the composition presents a tranquil Maine fishing village extending along the shoreline, with modest clapboard buildings, wooden wharves, small boats, rocky outcroppings and prominently rendered lobster traps establishing an unmistakable Down East maritime setting. Field's deliberately simplified forms, flattened spatial construction and restrained palette of sea blue, weathered grey, ochre, green and muted earth tones lend the work the appealing immediacy associated with regional folk, naive and vernacular landscape painting while preserving numerous details of traditional coastal life.

Particularly desirable from a cataloguing and provenance standpoint is the period typed label retained on the reverse, identifying the subject as "DEER ISLE, MAINE," naming F.F. Field and recording an Ottawa, Ontario address for the artist.

The subject matter is especially appealing within the collecting fields of Maine art, New England marine painting, American and Canadian regional art, coastal folk art, harbor scenes and historic fishing-community imagery. Rather than presenting an idealized grand seascape, Field concentrates upon the quieter infrastructure of maritime life - sheds, docks, traps, boats and shoreline dwellings - giving the painting an appealing documentary character and strong sense of place. Deer Isle remains internationally associated with Maine's maritime culture and lobster-fishing heritage, making an explicitly identified original view of the community particularly attractive to collectors of coastal Americana and regional landscape painting.

Presented in a substantial vintage wood frame with broad cream-colored liner and gilt-tone accent molding, retaining an "F.F. FIELD" name plaque at the lower center. Painting measures 16 x 20 inches; overall framed dimensions 22 1/4 x 26 1/2 inches. Visible condition includes age-related toning and discoloration, most noticeably within the upper sky, fine surface cracking/craquelure, scattered minor surface marks, and expected rubbing, scuffs and small losses to the vintage frame.

An atmospheric and highly decorative original Deer Isle, Maine coastal painting combining identifiable New England subject matter, signed authorship, period reverse documentation and classic lobster-fishing imagery - an appealing acquisition for a collection devoted to Maine paintings, American coastal art, New England maritime scenes, regional folk art, fishing villages or traditional marine subjects.
