S. Spielman
Portrait of a Woman in Red, 2004
Signed and dated lower right: S. Spielman / 2004 ©
Inscribed A/P 2/10
Editioned color image on textured canvas
Presented in a substantial sculptural black frame

A commanding large-format figurative portrait by S. Spielman, dated 2004 and distinguished by the lower-right designation A/P 2/10, identifying the present work as Artist's Proof number 2 from a stated group of ten artist's proofs. Combining highly finished realist portraiture with dramatic scale and an unusually expressive sculptural frame, the work possesses considerable visual presence and decorative sophistication.

The sitter is presented frontally and at close range, meeting the viewer with a composed, unwavering gaze. Long dark hair falls vertically around the face and shoulders, creating a strong structural counterpoint to the luminous modeling of the features. Rich crimson and burgundy tones are balanced against warm flesh tones and the dark mass of the sitter's hair, while localized highlights provide strong tonal contrast. Viewed within its broad black surround, the image takes on an almost architectural presence suitable for a substantial residential, hospitality, corporate, or collection interior.

Of particular collector interest is the inscription A/P 2/10. Within established printmaking and editioning practice, the designation A/P, or Artist's Proof, identifies an impression reserved apart from the conventionally numbered edition. The inscription therefore specifically records this example as the second artist's proof within a stated proof group of ten. It should not, however, be interpreted as evidence that the entire edition consisted of only ten works, as the size of any corresponding standard edition is presently unknown.

The presentation is completed by an exceptionally broad and visually distinctive black sculptural Roma frame, whose deeply modeled horizontal ridges, irregular contours, and substantial depth create an almost relief-like architectural border around the portrait. Far from functioning as a neutral surround, the fra
