A superb and exceptionally expressive contemporary Inuit sculpture by acclaimed Coral Harbour artist Malito Akesuk, this masterfully carved Bear (4” x 3 1/2” x 6 ½” tall), executed in 2020, exemplifies the powerful sculptural traditions that have made Coral Harbour one of the Arctic's most respected carving communities. Accompanied by its original Government of Canada Certified Inuit Art authenticity card identifying the artist, community, title and date, this dynamic work combines impeccable provenance with commanding artistic presence, qualities increasingly sought after by serious collectors of Canadian Inuit art and important Indigenous sculpture.

Unlike the more commonly encountered walking or resting bear compositions, Akesuk presents the animal fully upright in an exhilarating moment of animation, its massive body rising confidently on its hind legs while its forepaws sweep dramatically outward and its head is thrust skyward in a triumphant roar. The composition conveys extraordinary movement, transforming one of the Arctic's most iconic creatures into a living expression of power, celebration and survival. This unusually vertical interpretation is significantly less common than traditional horizontal bear carvings and distinguishes the sculpture within both the artist's oeuvre and the broader field of contemporary Inuit art.

Carved from richly toned dark Arctic stone displaying attractive natural mineral variation and a lustrous hand-polished surface, the sculpture demonstrates Akesuk's confident command of volume and negative space. The broad shoulders, muscular torso and swelling haunches are reduced to elegant, monumental forms while carefully incised claws, deeply undercut forelegs and the boldly opened mouth introduce dramatic shadows that change continuously as the sculpture is viewed from different angles. Every perspective reveals a fresh silhouette, allowing the work to possess an almost kinetic quality despite the permanence of stone.

The reverse is equally refined, with sweeping uninterrupted curves emphasizing the tremendous physical mass of the bear, while the side profiles showcase the elongated muzzle, recessed eye and distinctive angular planes that are hallmarks of accomplished contemporary Inuit carving. Rather than pursuing strict naturalism, Akesuk distills the essence of the polar bear into a timeless sculptural form that simultaneously embodies Arctic wildlife, Inuit cultural identity and the enduring relationship between artist and land. The result is a sculpture possessing remarkable emotional presence far beyond its modest scale.

The underside retains the artist's incised signature and identifying marks, while the accompanying original Canadian Inuit Art authenticity certificate confirms the work as "Bear," carved by Malito Akesuk of Coral Harbour in 2020. The presence of this original documentation substantially enhances the sculpture's desirability, provenance and long-term collectabi
