An outstanding piece of Reconstruction-era Americana, this genuine 1868 Shield Nickel represents the second year of full regular-issue production for the United States' first-ever 5-cent nickel coin. Introduced by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre in 1866, the Shield Nickel was authorized by Congress to replace the tiny silver half dime and help alleviate the critical nationwide shortage of small change following the economic devastation of the Civil War.
