Antique Salt Glaze Tobacco Spit Jug Circa 1880

19th century salt glaze stoneware crock. 9" tall x 7" diameter. Also called turkey dropping or orange Peel texture. Stamped C. Description: An antique stoneware jug featuring a classic salt-glazed finish in warm speckled tan and brown tones, with the characteristic mottled "orange peel" texture typical of period stoneware. The jug features a strap handle and a narrow neck fitted with a wooden stopper, while the shoulder shows dark tobacco spit glaze accents, a period decorating technique using splashes of manganese or iron slip that create distinctive dark blotches against the lighter ground. This sturdy utilitarian piece would have originally been used for storing liquids like whiskey, vinegar, or cider. A wonderful addition for collectors of antique stoneware, primitive kitchenware, farmhouse/country decor, or American pottery history. Condition: Overall good antique condition consistent with age and utilitarian use. Surface shows expected glaze speckling and the characteristic tobacco spit dark glaze accents as part of the original decorative technique, shown in photos. Please examine all photos closely for any chips, hairline cracks, or crazing. Wooden stopper included (not original to the piece).
