A pair of pecked and ground hardstone tools from the North American Archaic period. The Maine specimen features a full-length channel and dark gray-green patina with a string tag inscribed Found in Maine. The New Jersey example has a deepchannel, a tag recording its 1941 recovery, and a small circular label with the number 8. The large gouge is 12 inches long and the smaller measures 6.25 inches long.Structurally sound with typical archaeological wear. The Maine gouge shows minor bit nicks and surface pitting. The New Jersey gouge exhibits chips along the bit and edges with some iron staining.
