The 1926-D "3-1/2 Legged" Buffalo Nickel (classified by experts as variety FS-901) is a highly sought-after, major U.S. coin error. Similar to the famous 1937-D 3-legged variety, this coin was created when a Denver Mint worker excessively polished a damaged or worn reverse die. In the process, the abrasive tool accidentally erased the upper portion of the bison's front right leg, leaving only a partial lower leg and a faint hoof.
