Mid-Century Modern St. Francis Xavier Painting

This mid-century modern religious painting depicts St. Francis Xavier in a striking, stylized iconographic format. The composition features clean, hand-painted lettering flanking the saint's visage, reading ST. FRANCIS XAVIER on the left and the Latin missionary motto DA MIHI ANIMAS ("Give me souls") on the right. Rendered with bold brushwork, the piece balances mid-century portraiture styles with traditional Christian iconography, highlighted by a rich, dark teal halo. The lower right edge features a prominent, hand-painted signature in bright blue oil paint reading D. WALPOLE, O.S.B., identifying the artist as Father Donald Walpole (1917–2012), a highly accomplished master artist and Benedictine monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey. Immediately below the signature, the work is dated 9-10-80 (September 10, 1980).
