This is a pair of US Army Field Artillery Officer subdued metal collar devices. The insignia, featuring crossed cannons (field guns), has been used on artillerists' uniforms for more than 180 years. The subdued black metal finish indicates a type of uniform wear designed for reduced visibility in the field. Officers wear this insignia on the lower half of the uniform collar. The current design was reinstated and approved in 1968, when the Air Defense Artillery and Field Artillery branches were separated.
