The Allied occupation of Japan lasted from September 2, 1945, to April 28, 1952, beginning with the nation's formal surrender at the end of World War II and concluding when the Treaty of San Francisco went into effect. Administered primarily by United States forces under the autocratic direction of General Douglas MacArthur—the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP)—the occupation enacted profound military, political, economic, and social transformations.
