The Death of the Doctor (with annotated notes), design for a fresco at Careggi, Florence (Italy), fresco watercolour study, circa 1844, Provenance: Watts Gallery, Compton, Literature: M.S. Watts, London 1912, page 61, Ronald Chapman The Laurel And The Thorn, London 1945, pp 28-29, Waddington's 12-07-1998 Auction Lot, 82. Measuring 8 x 9 ½ inches. Note: in 1843, Watts won a fresco design competition for Charles Barry's Houses of Parliament, and he used the prize funds to travel to Florence. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy (elected Member, 1867) and the Grosvenor Gallery. In 1902, Watts received the Order of Merit for his work. Provenance: Fine Ottawa Estate.
