Lafayette & Morris Family Provenance. An exceptional and historically significant 18th-century wrought and cast iron long-handled hearth waffle iron. This rare piece of early American culinary history features a unique dual-patterned interior: one plate presents a crisp, fine cross-hatched grid, while the opposing plate is intricately decorated with a repeating diamond-and-fleur-de-lis motif—a design heavily indicative of its French origins and craftsmanship. Forged for use in an open-hearth fireplace, the iron is equipped with exceptionally long handles designed to protect the cook from direct flame heat. The handle terminals retain their original, fully functional forged figure-eight iron hasp/latch to securely lock the plates together during cooking and flipping. According to historical records, this specific iron holds remarkable foundational provenance. It was brought to the United States from France by the Marquis de Lafayette as a personal gift for Mrs. Robert Morris (Mary White Morris), wife of Founding Father and financier of the American Revolution, Robert Morris, during Lafayette’s second visit to America. A premier, museum-quality artifact bridging early American political society, French alliance history, and open-hearth culinary arts. 4.5" x 8" x 32"L
